Kilmore

Kilmore West (Irish: An Choill Mhór Thiar, meaning “Big Forest West”) is a locality within Coolock, situated on Dublin’s Northside, Ireland. Located in the Dublin 5 district, it borders Santry, Beaumont, Artane, and other areas within Coolock.

Kilmore West has national schools for both boys and girls, Scoil Fhursa and Scoil Ide, respectively. It also has its own parish and Roman Catholic church, St. Luke the Evangelist, with the parish priest being (2007) Fr. Jack Lynch. The full RC parish name is Kilmore Road West, the original townland of Kilmore Big being entirely to the west of the Kilmore Road, in Artane.

Large well known families living in Kilmore consist of the Doyle, Lawless, Maples, Bell and Geraghty clans.

Notable local activities include pigeon fancying and boxing, both based in the local community centre. Soccer also commands the allegiance of a large section of the community (such as Kilmore Celtic) as does gaelic football. There is a local Tang Soo Do club. Sea angling, while not possible in this inland suburb, is also a popular local pastime. And of course Kilmore West Recreation Centre and St. Luke’s Social Centre are well-used community venues.

Other local organisations include the Kilmore West Youth Project, Youth Action Kilmore, the Kilmore West Community Playgroup, the Ana Wim Kilmore Drug Awareness Project, Kilmore West Red Cross (now defunct) and the Kilmore West Community Development Project.

I grew up on Castletimon Park number 8…had a great childhood there..always remember the big freeze in the early 80’s and the mother of all snowball fights in the corner house with the pine trees next to the Farrell family’s house…there must have been 30 or 40 kids involved….made great friends there…it was a great place to grow up in..!!!
